Positive Portfolio Assignment

Staying positive.  My Leadership Style.

While staying positive is easier said than done, coaches should strive to find “good,” regardless of how bad the situation is, especially when a practice or game is not going according to plan.  Establishing a positive culture on the team breeds good results.  In a sport where failure is common (the best hitters fail 70% of the time), helping your athletes stay positive can be challenging.  In order to overcome the affects of “failure” in softball, I have helped my hitters reassess their definition of success.  Instead of measuring success by outcome, we have redefined it to measure success by effort.  I teach my players that if you swing the bat hard and miss, at least you were successful because you gave it 100% effort.  The players have already seen positive results by not allowing their effort to be outweighed by the fear of failure.  We will see where this philosophy takes us this season.
